TV broadcaster Star India has been awarded the audio-visual production rights for this year’s edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 cricket tournament.
The rights were awarded by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The deal also covers the country’s 2018/19 domestic season, and the BCCI reserves the right to extend the contract for an additional year.
Indian newspaper The Hindu reports that Star and IMG were the only two interested parties, with Star’s Rs 9.5 crore (US$1.5 million) bid proving enough to fend off the global media agency and secure the rights. The Hindu added that this year will represent the first time that the IPL’s rights holder will also produce live coverage of the competition.
Last September, Star India acquired all media rights to the IPL in a five-year deal worth Rs16,347.50 crore (US$2.55 billion), replacing Sony.
The 2018 IPL season gets underway on 7th April, when last year’s champions the Mumbai Indians host the Chennai Super Kings, who are returning to the competition after serving a two-year suspension.
